Please see below info on recent death of 4 year Killer Whale/GAJA swimmer Justus Baird ( 70).
While popular with his teammates, many of whom (like you) were aware of him, swam with or against him, but few in Masters really knew him as a reading of his below death notice will confirm (i.e.he was a college level swimmer at UGA-Athens).
It was his idea to create Championship Team Certificates for members of the 2010 and 2011 GAJA USMS National Championship teams as well as the special Appreciation plaque for Donna Hooe; who coached both teams.
About 3 years ago, when he returned from the 2010 LCM Championship in San Juan with a relay gold medal, I had lunch with him and he told me that doctors had given him 6 months to live. He said he was going to stretch that out to somehow swim at the 2011 LCM Championships which he did very successfully; earning additional medals. That meet turned out to be his last Masters meet.
He competed in 4 Nationals winning about 20 medals in breaststroke, fly . IM and relays'. His name is in the Georgia record books on at least 2 relays---one from 2009 INDY LCM Champ..

BAIRD, III, Justus Justus Nathan Baird, III died April 21, 2013 in Arlington, VA from prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Tilson Baird. He is survived by his sister Barbara Baird of Harriman, TN. He was born on February 8, 1943 to Dr. "Betty" Mary Elizabeth Tilson Baird Brown and Justus Nathan Baird, Jr. in St. Louis, MO. After graduating from the Castle Heights Military Academy High School (Lebanon, TN) in 1960, he went on to earn four degrees: B.S. Forestry with a swimming scholarship (U. Georgia at Athens, 1964), M.A. in Entomology including extensive work in central America (U. Kansas, 1968), Masters in Public Health (U. Texas, 1973), and PhD in Environmental Health (U. Texas, 1989). From 1968 to 1971 he was a captain in the US Army, Medical Service Corps, and served in Vietnam, protecting troops from infectious diseases. In his first career, Justus directed public health departments in Houston, San Antonio, and Milwaukee. In his second career, he worked as a board certified financial planner and ski patrol director. Throughout his life he pursued a number of passions: tracing his Scottish ancestry, barbershop singing, investing, sailboat racing, competitive masters swimming, and messing around with computers. His community advocacy included fighting for visitation rights of divorced fathers and improving local environmental planning. A voracious reader, Justus was known for his breadth of knowledge in a wide variety of topics and would threaten anyone who tried to dispose of his copious amounts of reading material. He shared his love of nature through his bountiful gardening, family camping trips, and timeless photography. He is survived by two ex-wives, Linda Elaine Janson of Houston (maiden name Norling, married from 1970-1980), and Salpi Adrouny of Atlanta (married from 1991-2012). He is also survived by two children from his first marriage, son Rabbi Justus N. Baird, IV of Princeton, NJ and daughter Dr. Jennifer Baird Humberson of Richmond, VA. Justus cherished his five grandchildren and fostered in them a love for reading, sports, and the outdoors. A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Roane Memorial Gardens located at 1400 North Gateway Avenue in Rockwood, TN followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm at Bethel Presbyterian Church at 203 South Kentucky Street in Kingston, TN. Donations may be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

2013 USMS Registration
It's time to renew your USMS registration. Your 2012 membership expired December 31. The fee this year is $45.00 ($50.00 for the Georgia Masters Killer Whales). The Georgia LMSC fee remains the same to offset a $2.00 increase in the USMS fee.
If you would like to renew using a credit card click on the "Join/Renew" USMS button on the upper left hand corner of this page. If you do not find your club/chapter listed it is because your club/chapter has not renewed for 2013 yet; have your coach contact Bill Lotz. If you would prefer to mail in your registration with a check you may click on the Team button on the left, then scroll down to your team. If your team has a "2013" in the Registration Box they have renewed for 2013. Click on the "2013" in your team’s box and it will bring up the individualized registration form for that team.
